Fishing Resort Honeymoon

If you’re the outdoors type who likes fishing, why not work it into your honeymoon? Plenty of couples have done just that (see links to their stories below), proving that fishing can be a great way to spend “alone time” with your new spouse and unwind after the wedding. If you’re squeamish about the thought of putting a worm on a hook, let your man (or woman) do it for you and just enjoy the outdoors, the gentle waves, the quiet, and most of all, each other.

Maybe you aren’t into fishing and this sort of honeymoon doesn’t appeal to you. But don’t scratch it off your list yet—these days, fishing resorts cater to the non-fishing type as well, offering comfortable cabins and activities such as paddle boating, swimming, and hiking. Some even have indoor pools and spas and other indoor activities that have nothing to do with fishing. If money is no object for you, and you would like to compromise with your mate and fish but enjoy a little pampering too, then a fishing resort and spa might suit you well. However, if you are a die-hard fishing couple or you don’t mind “roughing it” (although most resorts have comfortable cabins) then something simpler and easier on the wallet might be better for you.

Cost

Fishing resort prices vary as much as any other resort; we looked at two on the web to get a general idea of prices. The Tomahawk Resort on Lake of the Woods in Ontario (see link below) offers a two-bedroom lakeside cabin for $400 per week; boat rentals run about $100 - $150 per week, and guided fishing trips range from $110 to $225 per person, depending on the plan. Two-bedroom cabins at Cass Lake Lodge in Minnesota (see link below) cost between $490 and $595 per week.

Activities & Attractions

  • Expand your horizons. You might have yourself pegged as a city slicker but you could surprise yourself by trying something new. Most fishing resorts have guides that will come out with you to show you the “hot spots” for fishing, how to cast, bobber fish and troll—and they might even put your worm on your hook for you.

  • Enjoy nature. Both fishing in the summer and ice fishing in the winter allows you to take in the beauty around you. You can’t help but notice the beautiful fall colors, the frolicking geese along the shoreline, or the icy-blue colors of the ice beneath you.

  • Enjoy each other. There is something about fishing that almost forces you to slow down. You have beauty literally at your fingertips if you choose to lazily let your fingers slide in the water as you troll in your boat. You have the beauty of a sunset right before your eyes. And most of all, you have the company of your love right by your side for as long as you want—even if the fish don’t bite.

  • When the fish aren't biting.... Or when you've had enough of fishing for a while, take advantage of the other activities most resorts offer: go swimming, hiking, take a paddle boat ride, or just sit on the dock and relax. Tomahawk Resort in Ontario, Canada, is set in beautiful Prince Edward County, a place famous for its sand dunes and picturesque countryside.

  • Stay inside. Snuggle in front of the fireplace with your honey with some hot chocolate or just cozy up in bed and listen to the peaceful calm of the lake waters and the swaying trees overhead.

Honeymoon Rainbows: Trout (and marital) bliss on the Upper Kenai

"I was in Alaska, on my honeymoon, fishing the Kenai River, and my wife was perfectly happy. People bandy about the phrase 'It doesn’t get any better than this,' but honestly, does it?" Dave Hurteau's Field & Stream article about his fishing honeymoon in Alaska.

Fishing Honeymoon

"I looked in the water to see this huge fish hovering under the tinny. I looked at Nay and said, 'There’s a bloody big shark under the boat!' Now Naomi is just a little petrified of sharks so it wasn’t the brightest thing to say while she was fighting a fish...." Jason Calleja describes an exciting fishing honeymoon off Australia's Thevenard Island.
