Ice Hotel Honeymoon in Fairbanks, Alaska
Chena Hot Springs
Resort, located 60 miles northeast of Fairbanks, Alaska, opened the
first U.S. snow-and-ice hotel during the winter of 2003-2004. Smaller than most
snow-and-ice hotels, the Aurora Ice Hotel has only six guest rooms, a bar,
ice gazebo (for weddings), a stage, and a turret from which guests can
view the night sky in the hope of catching the aurora borealis (northern
lights). What it lacks in size Aurora hopes to make up for in splendor;
an award-winning, world-class sculptor carves fantastic ice sculptures
for the hotel. "Jousting knights, gargoyles and winged mythical lions
will adorn the structure—it will be like visiting a European art
museum," the hotel's web site boasts. The hotel even advertises a
playable pipe organ made of ice.
The folks at Chena Hot Springs
Resort claim that Fairbanks is one of the best places in the world to
view the northern lights—and if the pictures on their web site are
representative, we believe it. There is even an observatory, about halfway
between the resort and Fairbanks, that studies the aurora borealis.
In addition to its "cool"
accommodations, the
resort at Chena Hot Springs also offers heated accommodations and
natural hot spring mineral baths. Chena Hot Springs Resort offers two-
and three-night Aurora Ice Hotel packages; one night is spent in the ice
hotel, with the remaining nights spent in other lodgings at Chena Hot
Springs Resort. Read more about this and other ice hotels on the Ice Hotel Honeymoon
overview page.
