Avenue du Petit Mont . .
. Douet de la Mer . . . Jardin d'livet . . . . Perusing placenames
around Jersey, you'd be forgiven for thinking it was part of France. It
is, after all, only fourteen miles from the French coast. But although
Jersey retains much of its French heritage in Norman-style farmhouses,
narrow country lanes and French cuisine, Jersey just celebrated one
thousand years of allegiance to the British crown.

At nine by five miles, Jersey is the
largest of the Channel Islands, and also the most southerly, lying just
14 miles off the coast of France. The southern coast features miles of
sandy beaches, while the northern coast is marked by dramatic cliffs.
Lavish floral gardens abound in Jersey, thanks to its favorable climate;
in fact, the island is home to one of the world's largest orchid
collections, a working lavender farm, and the annual Battle of the
Flowers, a festival featuring hundreds of flower-covered floats.

Browsing for hotel and bed and breakfast inns, we
found rates running from £40 to £115 per
night (click through to a currency converter on our
travel tools page). Camping and
youth hostels are also available, if you can live without a honeymoon
suite. Airfare from New York City/Newark varied widely depending on the
season—more than $1000 per person during the summer, but less
than $500 per person during the winter.

Green Lanes and
dedicated cycling trails make it possible to tour most of
Jersey on bike or foot.

-
Get around on bike. It's
certainly possible to drive around Jersey (alth0ugh see Lisa and
Jonathan Cook's advice at their honeymoon website below). But the
island has also encouraged walking and cycling with hundreds of
miles of paths and Green Lanes (automobiles are allowed on Green
Lanes, but the 15 mph speed limit favors cycling, walking, and
horseback riding). A coastal path (often referred to as the
Promenade) makes it possible to walk the entire perimeter of the
island.
-
Explore the Jersey countryside.
Get lost in a maze made of maize, taste wine and chocolate at the La
Mare Vineyards & Distillery, ride a steam train at the Pallot Steam
Museum, visit a Neolithic burial site, or wander among the wildlife
in the 31-acre Jersey Zoo.
-
Do downtown. Downtown St.
Helier offers a mix of shops, restaurants, and entertainment
venues including a Victorian vegetable and fish market, street
performers, the Jersey Arts Centre, and the Jersey Opera House.
-
Play on the coast. A variety
of vendors keep visitors busy on the coast with cruises, sailboat
tours, and watersports (surfing, scuba diving, waterskiing,
canoeing, sailboarding, and so on).
-
Relive the German occupation.
Memories of the German occupation of the island during World War II
run deep in Jersey, and reminders of the occupation are everywhere,
from military museums to restored German coastal defenses and an
extensive network of underground tunnels, all open to visitors.
-
Make trips to the other Channel
Islands. Even if you find enough to keep you occupied on
Guernsey, you won't want to miss the charms of the other Channel
Islands. You can find out more about them at our
Channel Islands Honeymoon
page.
